Movin’ on Up: Using Bibliometrics and Altmetrics in Career Advancement
ZoomLibrarians of every ilk need to demonstrate their individual professional and scholarly contributions and achievements for career advancement. Scholarship is not limited to publishing journal articles but also consists of creative works that contribute to the body of knowledge such as presentations, proposals, and grant winning. Measuring the impact of scholarship is an important aspect of career development for librarians. Bibliometrics and altmetrics are measures used to quantify scholarly impact in academic settings, gleaned from a variety of platforms with analytics. These measures can also be used to demonstrate advancement and achievement for public librarians, school librarians, and other special librarians in evaluations, professional portfolios, and justification for raises. This presentation will review common bibliometric measures and their impact, how to use alternative metrics to demonstrate achievement and impact for performance evaluations, and other indicators to “move on up” to an advanced position.
